Saints of Italy Pilgrimage

Day 1: ARRIVE ROME (D)
Welcome to Rome, the Eternal City. Join with fellow pilgrims this evening for a Welcome Dinner at our group hotel.

Day 2: MONTECASSINO / POMPEII TO AMALFI (BD)
We venture towards the stunning Amalfi Coast this morning and wind our way up to the spectacular mountaintop Abbey of Montecassino founded by St Benedict in 529. We soak up the splendor of the surrounding countryside before our guided tour including the Basilica with the opportunity to pray before the relics of St Benedict. We continue south to Pompeii to pray before the Shrine of the Holy Rosary. After a guided visit of the ancient ruins we head south to our beautiful hotel in the spectacular village of Amalfi.

Day 3: ISLE OF CAPRI EXCURSION (BD)
We set off by boat to one of the most picturesque islands in the world, Capri, with an optional visit to the remarkable “Blue Grotto”. Explore Mount Solaro and Villa San Michele, admiring the breathtaking views over the island. Continue on to the Church of San Michele – one of the most exquisite churches in the region. Upon our return to Amalfi, pilgrims may wander up to the Cathedral of St Andrew, housing the apostles’ relics.

Day 4: VIA SANTISSIMA TRINITA ABBEY & PIETRELCINA TO SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO (BD)
After winding our way through Amalfi’s picturesque countryside, we come to the Santissima Trinita Abbey, under the care of the Benedictines for more than a thousand years. After our enriching guided visit, we journey to Pietrelcina, home village of St Padre Pio where we will pray at the place of his birth. On to San Giovanni Rotondo where the stigmatist spent a lifetime of prayer, penance and self-denial through intense pain.

Day 5: SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO & MONTE SANT’ANGELO (BD)
This morning we tour the shrine including: Tomb and cell of St Padre Pio; his Confessional; and pray before the Crucifix from which he received the stigmata. We will hear an inspirational talk by one of the friars and view a special rare film showing highlights of St Padre Pio’s daily life in the Monastery. We travel on to Monte Sant’ Angelo to visit the hilltop Sanctuary of St Michael the Archangel and celebrate Mass in the Grotto Cave.

Day 6: VIA LANCIANO TO LORETO (BD)
We journey north to Lanciano, scene of the 8th century Eucharistic Miracle, where moments after consecration, the host changed to flesh and the wine to blood in the hands of a Basilian monk. We come face-to-face with the incorrupt sacred relics before travelling on to the great Marian shrine of Loreto. We visit the Holy House of Nazareth and the beautiful Madonna of Loreto before enjoying the privilege of an overnight stay within the quaint hilltop village.

Day 7: VIA SIENA TO ASSISI (BD)
Today in Siena, Italy’s medieval masterpiece and birthplace of Saints Catherine and Bernadine, we visit St Dominic’s Basilica and view the incorrupt head of St Catherine before wandering through the towns narrow lanes to the Basilica of St Francis. Here we will encounter another Eucharistic miracle defying all scientific testing. After a relaxing stroll through Piazza del Campo, we journey through scenic Umbrian countryside and reach Assisi, the hillside town where St Francis tended the poor and sick.

Day 8: ASSISI PILGRIMAGE (BD)
With a deepening sense of the spirit of St Francis, we are guided through the towns highlights culminating in the Woods at the Hermitage, built on the cave where St Francis spent many hours in prayer. At the Basilica of St Clare, we pray before the Holy Crucifix from which God spoke to Francis and, taking the stairway down to the crypt, we view St Clare’s body. After some free time to explore this oasis of peace we can choose to attend Vespers and listen to the angelic voices of the Poor Clare nuns.

Day 9: FLORENCE DAY TRIP (OR FREE TIME IN ASSISI) (BD)
Today we reach Florence, the art capital of the world and home to fascinating churches, galleries and museums. Our tour of this enchanting city begins with Mass at the Basilica of Santa Croce before a visit to the Academy of Fine Arts. We will visit the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo, and nearby, see Ghiberti’s celebrated bronze doors to the Baptistery. After some free time to wander, we return to Assisi for our final celebration dinner.

Day 10: RETURN TO ROME (B)
We conclude our time in Assisi with Mass and a guided exploration of the buzzing Basilica of St Francis. Wander through the marvels of the Upper Basilica before our tour descends to the crypt of the Lower Basilica where Francis was laid in 1230. Finally, we visit the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels down on the plains where St Francis spent most of his life, and where he died in 1226. Our great pilgrimage concludes upon our transfer back to Rome.
