DAY 2BETHLEHEM & SURROUNDS (BLD)

Theme: The Birth of Jesus

We set out this morning to the nearby hillside region to honour the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth at the village of Ein Karem. Here we ascend the path to the Church of the Visitation dedicated to Mary’s ‘Magnificat’ (‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord’ Lk 1:46). Take quiet time here to wander the grounds and spiritually reflect on this powerful episode in the Gospels.

Continue on to the Church of St John the Baptist to pray before the grotto of his birth. Onwards to Bethlehem University to engage with local Catholic students and to hear their stories of resilience and hope before being served lunch by members of their Hospitality department. Celebrate a stunning Mass at the Cave Chapel at the Shepherds’ Field where the angels appeared to the Shepherds on that first Christmas night.

The pinnacle of our day is our visit to the Church of the Nativity; birthplace of Jesus and the oldest complete church in the Christian world. Bow low to enter the sacred grotto through the Door of Humility as we descend to the Holy Manger where a silver star in the floor marks the actual spot where Jesus was born. Day 3VIA NAZARETH TO THE SEA OF GALILEE (BLD)

Theme: The Formative Years of Jesus

We continue our journey with the Holy Family into the stone-paved town of Jesus’ childhood, Nazareth. Here on the outskirts we come to Nazareth Village, an authentic re-creation of life as it was in the days of Jesus. Take a parable-rich stroll back in time as our guide brings to life the environment and atmosphere that shaped Jesus’ early years. Our memorable visit is made complete with a fascinating firstcentury meal in a stone-dining area typical of the days of Christ.

In Nazareth we soon enter the Basilica of the Annunciation where a traditional cave becomes our focal point as we ponder Mary’s great yet humble ‘YES’ to God. After a visit to the Church of St Joseph we visit a traditional Jewish synagogue where the Holy Family would have once worshipped. Arrive into the village of Cana where Jesus performed his very first miracle at the request of his mother. Onwards to the magnificent Sea of Galilee.

Day 4SEA OF GALILEE (BLD)

Theme: The Public Ministry of Jesus

We set out to Capernaum, the once fishing village of the first four apostles which also became the home town of Jesus. At Nof Ginosar, marvel at the restored first century ‘Jesus boat’ whose discovery rocked the archaeological and spiritual world.

From here we sail on a traditional vessel for an unforgettable highpoint of our pilgrim journey – a spectacular Private Mass in the centre of Lake Galilee. Here we’ll float in quiet tranquillity, reflecting upon the miracles of Jesus calming the storm and appearing to the apostles walking on this very water.

Experience a ‘St Peter’s Fish’ lunch together before coming to Tabgha, site of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes and pray within the 4th century church housing amazing Byzantine mosaics. Finally, we come to the Church of the Primacy of Peter down by the shores of the lake. Here Jesus challenged Peter and each one of us “Do you really love me? Feed my sheep”.

Mass Setting: Afloat the Sea of Galilee

Day 5MT OF BEATITUDES / HAIFA / MT TABOR (BLD)

Theme: Mountains of Grace

Arise for a breathtaking Mass at the Mount of Beatitudes and take time in this stunning place to ponder the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus’ recipe for a blessed life.

We travel west to Haifa where the Mediterranean Sea wraps around three sides of the city with intoxicating blue and gold beaches. After a tour of the stunning Stella Maris Monastery at Mount Carmel, we make our way to the House of Grace, a Catholic ministry that works with the most marginalised members of Haifa. We’ll share lunch and hear of the work of this powerful ministry in rehabilitating released prisoners.

Finally, we come to the foot of Mt Tabor only to ascend the narrow winding road by taxi, leading to the majestic summit. Here, in this breathtaking setting, Our Lord’s divinity shone forth in the Transfiguration.

Theme: The Passion of Jesus

We begin our day visiting the grand ‘Pater Noster’ Church at the Mt of Olives before making our way down the Palm Sunday Road to the Dominus Flevit Church for Mass with its sweeping views of the city. Here Jesus wept over Jerusalem during his final days.

We approach the quiet Garden of Gethsemane and enter the Church of the Agony containing the rock upon which Jesus prayed before his arrest. Enjoy a true pilgrim highlight as we enjoy exclusive gate entry into a secluded garden for extended prayer and reflection amidst ancient olive trees.

From here we cross town to the Israel Museum and after lunch, view the Second Temple Scale Model of Jerusalem as it was in the time of Jesus. In the adjacent Shrine of the Book Museum we examine the Dead Sea Scrolls with our own eyes.

Our afternoon concludes at Mt Zion to visit the Church of St Peter in Gallicantu commemorating Peter’s triple denial of Jesus as our pilgrimage enters the next phase of His Passion.

Finally, we come to the vicinity of the Temple Mount to see the Dome of the Rock, El Aqsa Mosque and the Western Wall.

Explore the Old City this afternoon at your own pace. Before dinner this evening we have the powerful opportunity to meet with Bereaved representatives from both sides of the Middle East conflict. Be deeply moved as we listen to their journey towards reconciliation and courageous love of neighbour.

Day 9JERUSALEM (BLD)

Theme: The Death & Resurrection of Jesus

We rise with the sun this morning to return to the Old City of Jerusalem and commence our Stations of the Cross, beginning from the Antonia Fortress where Jesus was condemned to death. Following in Our Lord’s footsteps, we walk and pray along the old Via Dolorosa and culminate at the site of Calvary where we will celebrate Mass here in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

We walk the stairway to the actual site where the Cross of Jesus once stood. Here at Calvary, we have the unique opportunity to touch the natural rock of Golgotha below with our pilgrim hands before entering the nearby Tomb of Christ. This will be the pinnacle Easter moment of our pilgrimage journey! After breakfast we visit the Church of St Anne before continuing to the adjacent Pool of Bethseda, the Lithostrotos (pavement) and the Flagellation and Condemnation Chapels which so vividly commemorate the last hours of Jesus’ life.

Our afternoon draws us out to the site of Emmaus for a prayerful time of reflection. Later, see the Holy Shroud Exhibit to view a full-size replica of the Holy Shroud of Turin. Enjoy a Special Celebration Dinner for our final night in a wonderful restaurant affording spectacular views over all of Jerusalem.

Mass Setting: The Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Day 10DEPART THE HOLY LAND (B)

Theme: The Ascension of Jesus

We return to the Mt of Olives and enter the Chapel of the Ascension which is believed to mark the place where Jesus ascended into heaven. Here we will close our pilgrimage and remember the Lord’s final words to the eleven disciples as He made the Great Commission: “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations…And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – (Mt 28). Return to Tel Aviv or Amman airport for homebound or ongoing flight connections.
