Our Lady of Guadalupe Pilgrimage with Fr Justin Torres

The miraculous story of the Virgin of Guadalupe who appeared to indigenous peasant, Juan Diego is revered throughout the Americas. A doubting Archbishop was convinced of the apparitions when Juan Diego, instructed by Our Lady, presented him with Castilian roses in winter, which are not found in Mexico, was well as an inexplicable image of the Virgin Mary imprinted on Juan’s cloak, known as a tilma. This miraculous tilma is viewed by over 20 million people who visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe each year.

Today we visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and celebrate Mass. View the miraculous tilma that bears a unique image of Our Lady, rich in symbolism that was quickly interpreted and embraced by the Aztec people. We will take time to pray here, including a visit to the San Jose Chapel, and understand the devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

We start our day with a celebration of Mass at the Sagrada Familia Church, followed by a visit to the museum. 

We continue our journey to Puebla, where we will explore the Catedral Basilica, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, which houses the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary, and Casa del Alfeñique, an outstanding example of 18th-century decorative style.

We begin our expanded time in the capital today with Mass and a visit to Templo de San Hipólito, dedicated to San Judas Tadeo, the patron saint of desperate causes and a beloved figure in Mexican popular devotion. We then visit the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in Coyoacán for a time of quiet prayer.

After lunch, we explore Barrio Santa María la Ribera, home to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and visit the Kiosco Morisco, an ornate 19th-century Moorish-style pavilion that represents Mexico’s blending of cultures.

In the evening, we will enjoy our final dinner at a local restaurant featuring mariachi music and a folkloric show.

Our Guadalupe pilgrimage concludes after Mass and breakfast this morning. We are transferred to Mexico airport for our homebound flights or for ongoing travel connections to the Catholic Missions of California Pilgrimage extension with Fr Justin. 

For those travelling on for the “Missions pilgrimage”, after checking into your hotel in San Diego, enjoy time to settle in before gathering with your fellow pilgrims for a welcome dinner and pilgrimage orientation.

This morning we depart San Diego and travel north along the Pacific Coast to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, often called the “King of the Missions” due to its impressive size and importance. Celebrate Mass within this magnificent mission church and spend time reflecting upon the Franciscan missionary spirit that transformed the region.

Continue to Mission San Juan Capistrano, known affectionately as the “Jewel of the Missions.” Wander through the serene courtyards, historic cloisters, and flowering gardens while learning of the mission’s enduring Catholic legacy. Enjoy free time for lunch in nearby Dana Point before continuing to Los Angeles.

Today we visit Christ Cathedral, the striking former Crystal Cathedral, now transformed into one of Southern California’s most significant Catholic churches. Celebrate Mass before enjoying a guided tour of this magnificent modern cathedral complex, a powerful symbol of renewal and evangelisation in contemporary America.

Later, experience the iconic highlights of Los Angeles with a guided sightseeing tour through Beverly Hills and Hollywood. See the famed Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre, Sunset Boulevard, Wilshire Boulevard, and the Avenue of the Stars. This afternoon offers a fascinating contrast between California’s spiritual heritage and its globally recognised entertainment culture.

Celebrate Mass this morning at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the mother church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Following a guided visit of the cathedral, depart the city and journey north along California’s spectacular coastline.

Arrive in the elegant seaside community of Santa Barbara and visit Old Mission Santa Barbara, often called the “Queen of the Missions” for its beauty and remarkable preservation. Founded in 1786, the mission remains an active Franciscan parish and an enduring witness to California’s Catholic roots.

Continue northward to Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa where we explore the mission founded by St Junípero Serra in 1772.

This morning depart for the picturesque coastal village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, one of California’s most charming and artistic communities. Visit Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, regarded as one of the most beautiful and historically significant of all the California Missions. Celebrate Mass at the mission where St Junípero Serra is buried, offering pilgrims a profound spiritual connection to the founder of the California Mission system.

Continue through California’s scenic countryside, stopping at a local winery for a tour and tasting experience. Later visit Mission San Juan Bautista, dramatically situated beside the historic El Camino Real. With its expansive mission church and peaceful atmosphere, this mission provides a moving glimpse into early Catholic life in California. 

Overnight San Francisco (BD)

Celebrate Mass this morning at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, renowned for its striking modern architecture and vibrant Catholic community. Following Mass, enjoy a guided tour of San Francisco, one of America’s most beautiful and culturally rich cities. Highlights include the Civic Centre, Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Park, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Presidio, and sweeping views of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Cross the bridge into Marin County and visit the charming waterfront town of Sausalito with free time for lunch and enjoying panoramic views across San Francisco Bay.

Following Mass, today is free to further enjoy San Francisco at your own pace. You may wish to explore Fisherman’s Wharf, ride the historic cable cars, visit Chinatown, or simply relax along the waterfront soaking in the atmosphere of this remarkable city. Optional excursions may also be arranged. This evening, gather with your fellow pilgrims for a farewell dinner as you reflect upon the spiritual richness, historical beauty, and enduring Catholic heritage encountered throughout your California pilgrimage.
