Pilgrimage to Mexico, Washington DC & New York with the Archdiocese of Sydney

Bishop Richard Umbers, Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney and Bishop Delegate for Life of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, invites you to join him for the March for Life Pilgrimage, from Mexico, to Washington and culminating in New York. This pilgrimage is an opportunity to grow closer in relationship with Our Lord and witness first-hand the life-giving movement of the prolife mission. Be truly uplifted by journeying through the Marian Shrine of Guadalupe in Mexico, participate in the March for Life in Washington D.C., and serve alongside the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and the Sisters of Life in New York.

DAY 1SATURDAY 18TH JANUARY 2020 – AUSTRALIA TO MEXICO CITY (D)

Depart Australia and arrive into Mexico City, Mexico’s capital. We are met on arrival and transferred to our central place of lodging.

DAY 2SUNDAY 19TH JANUARY – MEXICO CITY (BD)

Full day sightseeing tour visiting:
• Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven Consecrated in 1656, it is the largest cathedral in the Americas and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico. Here we shall celebrate Mass.
• Museum of the Templo Mayor (Greater Temple). The museum is located inside the archaeological site of the temple ruins, near the Cathedral. The temple was destroyed by the Spanish in 1521 to make way for the new cathedral. Today the Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Church of Our Lady of the Pillar). Constructed between 1772 and 1778. Its popular name, La Enseñanza Church (The Teaching Church), comes from one of the now disbanded convent’s main missions, which was to educate young girls. Today it is a National Monument.
• The Church of San Francisco. All that remains of the church and large monastery complex that was the headquarters of the first 12 Franciscan monks sent to evangelize New Spain. The church standing today is the third to be built on the site between 1710 and 1716. The first two sunk into the soft soil under Mexico City and had to be torn down.
• The Temple of San Felipe Neri. Commonly known as La Profesa (the Professed house), is a parish church established by the Jesuits and built between 1597 and 1610. The church is noted for its large collection of colonial-era artwork created by some of Mexico’s best artists and spanning three centuries.
• Teotihuacan and its monumental archaeological discoveries: This pre-Aztec city contains the Pyramids of the Sun, an amazing 215-foot-high pyramid, the awesome Pyramid of the Moon, the Temple of Quetzalcoatl with its enormous ornamental snake heads, and the grand Avenue of the Dead running the length of the city.

Day 3MONDAY 20TH JANUARY – GUADALUPE PILGRIMAGE DAY (BD)

Full day sightseeing tour visiting:
• Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe (New Basilica and Old Basilica). The New Basilica is home to the original image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and can be seen from any point within the building due to the circular floor plan. We shall celebrate Mass here and have the opportunity to view and to venerate the image of the Virgin.
• Tepeyac Hill and Area surrounding the Basilica. Here we see the original chapel on the exact site of the apparitions to Juan Diego (Capilla del Cerrito) and the Old Basilica completed in 1709. One special stop is La Capilla del Pocito (Chapel of the Little Well) – a well that reputedly opened under the feet of the Virgin. Here we will also have extensive time for prayer and reflection today.

Day 4TUESDAY 21ST JANUARY – TLAXCALA, OCOTLAN & PUEBLA PILGRIMAGE DAY (BD)

Full day sightseeing tour visiting:
• The holy Shrine of San Miguel del Milagro Here St Michael the Archangel appeared to Diego Lazaro in 1631.
• Basilica of Our Lady of Ocotlan It contains the image of Our Lady burnt into a tree after she appeared to Juan Diego in 1541.
• UNESCO World-Heritage listed city of Puebla including the St Francis of Assisi Church – home to the incorrupt body of Blessed Sebastian de Aparicio On our way back to Mexico City we stop by the Great Pyramid of Cholula.

Day 5WEDNESDAY 22ND JANUARY – MEXICO CITY TO WASHINGTON DC (TRAVEL DAY) (B)

Departing Mexico City today, we travel to the US capital – Washington DC! We are met on arrival and transferred to our central place of lodgings.

Day 6THURSDAY 23RD JANUARY – WASHINGTON DC (B)

Full day sightseeing tour visiting Washington City’s landmarks:
• The Lincoln Monument • Washington Monument • Photo stops at Capitol Hill and the White House • Saint John Paul II National Shrine In the afternoon we visit America’s largest church, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Here, the evening before the March for Life, thousands will gather for the National Prayer Vigil for Life – an evening of prayer, Mass and Adoration, in preparation for the March tomorrow.

Day 7FRIDAY 24TH JANUARY – 47th ANNUAL MARCH FOR LIFE (B)

Location: The March for Life Rally will take place at noon at 12th St. on the National Mall, in between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive. Following the Rally, the March will begin on Constitution Avenue between 12th and 14th Streets at approximately 1:00 pm. Schedule:
12:00 pm – Rally Program
1:00 pm – March up Constitution Avenue to Supreme Court and Capitol Building
3:00 pm – After finishing marching – Silent No More testimonies outside U.S. Supreme Court or visit the March for Life Expo.

Day 8SATURDAY 25TH JANUARY – STUDENTS FOR LIFE CONFERENCE (B)

The Students for Life Conference (SFLA) is the largest pro-life conference in the world. It is a one-day event that provides education, training and opportunities with pro-life activists from across America and national leaders who all know just how vital this prolife generation is to abolishing abortion in our lifetime.

Day 9SUNDAY 26TH JANUARY – VIA PHILADELPHIA TO NEW YORK (AUSTRALIA DAY) (B)

We depart Washington DC today and journey to Philadelphia, the ‘City of Brotherly Love’. Here we will visit:
• Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul (Mass) and opportunity to pray before the relics of St Katharine Drexel, foundress of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and canonised in 2000
• Shrine to St John Neumann – the first male American to be canonised In the afternoon, we journey on to the ‘Big Apple’ – New York City!

Day 10MONDAY 27TH JANUARY – NEW YORK CITY (B)

AM: Rising early we will transfer by coach to St Patrick’s Cathedral for morning Mass. From here we will head off on foot, to the St John the Martyr Church on 72nd St where we will learn about the Sisters of Life and their Apostolates.
PM: We will visit the St Francis halfway house in Brooklyn, meet with the residents of this house and enjoy lunch together. We return to our hotel this afternoon and take some time to share with each other about our experience thus far.

Day 11TUESDAY 28TH JANUARY – NEW YORK CITY: DAY OF MISSION WITH THE SISTERS OF LIFE/FRANCISCAN FRIARS OF THE RENEWAL (B)

Today we will experience first-hand the amazing work that the Sisters of Life and Franciscan Friars of the Renewal carry out in New York City. It will be a day of spiritual growth through witnessing first-hand the dynamic ministry that both of these amazing orders offer to the people of New York. (subject to confirmation)
